1984 by George Orwell – Book Design
1984 by George Orwell is a critically acclaimed novel that’s a commentary on what Orwell speculated for the future based on the issues in society at the time. The novel is considered to be one of Orwell’s best and also one that was ahead of its time.
The novel’s history and theme is what drew me to choose it when tasked to design a book for a student project. The project called for solutions to a cover, end paper, title page, and inside layouts of chapter pages. A lot of the influence for my design came from my research of Art Deco and Constructivism, which I felt played well to the themes and motifs of the novel. This style of design illustration in combination with the warm tones in the color palette are used to communicate the idea of totalitarianism and the dangers of such a controlling government or as said in the novel, “Big Brother.”
